At least 36 people have been killed, and more than 100 injured when bombs went off in two Coptic churches. The first bombing occurred in Tanta, it killed at least 25 and injured at least 78. The second bombing occurred in Alexandria, it killed 11 including 3 police officers and injured 35. ISIS Has claimed responsibility for the attacks according to USA Today.
Thousands gathered outside the church in Tanta after the deadly blast. Some spoke to the media about the carnage they had witnessed:
“There was blood all over the floor and body parts scattered.” – Witness
“There was a huge explosion in the hall. Fire and smoke filled the room and the injuries were extremely severe.” – Witness
Pope Tawadros was still in the building at the time of the explosion but was not harmed. The bombings come as Islamic State’s branch in Egypt is stepping up attacks against Christians. Just this February, Christian families in Egypt’s North Sinai province were the victims of targeted killings. Those attacks came after one of the deadliest on Egypt’s Christian minority, when a suicide bomber hit its largest Coptic cathedral, killing at least 25.
