An American man accused of trying to join ISIS has recently revealed a detailed plan to open routes between Syria and the USA via the Mexican border. Guled Ali Omar said the routes were to be used to carry out terrorist attacks.
Omar is among 5 men accused of trying to join ISIS. Omar (21), Hamza Naj Ahmed (21), Mohamed Abdihamid Farah (22), and Abdirahman Yasin Daud (22) have pleaded not guilty to conspiracy to commit murder outside the U.S.
Prosecutors claim audio recordings obtained during an investigation prove the defendants discussed the possibility of attacks in the U.S multiple times. Omar even spoke of establishing a route for fighters. Others spoke of killing FBI agents and shooting airplanes with homemade rockets.
The ISIS plot to enter the US was recently revealed via a government document filed in the above case. The defense contested that using the information would make it impossible for his client to get a fair trial as it would paint him as a terrorist and remind people of 9/11.
“absent any specific evidence that his client threatened the United States, any references to discussions about attacks would be prejudicial. To permit such references, as well as references to the Sept. 11 attacks or exhibits that show violent images of war crimes, would cause the jurors to decide out of fear and contempt alone.” defense attorney Bruce Nestor
